Australian cricketer, Brad Hogg will be Lifeline WA’s  newest Ambassador and hopes  to encourage more men to call Lifeline’s 13 11 14 crisis support line.

Brad Hogg will speak at Lifeline WA’s Black Diamond Gala Dinner on Saturday, August 6 at Beaumonde on the Point, detailing the highs and lows of his career and personal life and how he overcame those challenges.

The popular hero of the Big Bash League, star of the international T20 circuit and proud former Australian test cricketer is eager to raise awareness of Lifeline WA’s suicide prevention and crisis support services. It is a cause particularly meaningful to Hogg, who wrote candidly of his experience of depression and suicidal thoughts in his autobiography ‘The Wrong’un,” published last year.

“I wanted get involved with Lifeline WA as an Ambassador to encourage people to recognise when they need help and to most importantly reach out to get that help,” he said.

“There are many events in a man’s life that can have a huge impact on his mental wellbeing, relationships and finances; including getting married, having children, losing a job or being made redundant and divorce and separation,” Hogg said.

“I can relate and have struggled with some of those life events at different times and I wish I had known about the valuable support Lifeline WA provides to Western Australians in crisis.”

Lifeline WA receives 55,000 calls per year from Western Australians in crisis, with suicide being the leading cause of death for Western Australian men between the ages of 15 and 44.

“Everywhere I go I’ll be promoting the message that it’s OK to reach out for support, that there is always someone at the end of the phone who can help,” Hogg said.

“Since I started working with Lifeline WA, I have learnt that men are three times more likely to take their own lives than women,” he said.

“However, men are the least likely to call the 13 11 14 crisis support line.”

Lifeline WA CEO Lorna MacGregor thanked Mr Hogg for supporting Lifeline WA.

“Brad is an inspiring and resilient person and he understands the positive influence he can have on Western Australians by sharing his story,” Ms MacGregor said.
