Lifeline WA is reminding people of the importance of reaching out to others who may be struggling this festive season.

While for most people the festive season is a joyful time, for many it’s a time of loneliness and isolation.

Lifeline WA chief executive officer Lorna MacGregor said Christmas was a time for giving and connection, and reaching out could literally save someone’s life.

“We hope people remember what the Christmas spirit is about, and take the time to reach out to others who might be lonely or stressed at this time of year,” she said.

“Often people’s existing supports such as mental health and support services, case workers and psychologists are on leave, which can result in them feeling vulnerable and lonely.

“It’s OK to ask someone directly if they are having suicidal thoughts, as it can be a circuit breaker, and can encourage them to seek help.”

More than 28,000 Australians are likely to call Lifeline for help this Christmas period.

Lifeline WA is reminding everyone that its telephone crisis supporters will be on call around the clock, including Christmas Day.

Ms MacGregor said financial pressures, family problems and alcohol and drug issues could be amplified by the stress of the holidays.

“We find that the demand for our services increases during the festive season as people seek assistance to cope with these pressures,” she said.

“We would encourage anyone who is having a personal crisis or suicidal thoughts to call our telephone crisis centre.”

As part of its Lights for Lifeline campaign to give the gift of life this holiday season, Lifeline WA put up the state’s biggest Christmas tree in Yagan Square.

The Lifeline WA Christmas tree is adorned with 47,000 lights representing the number of calls West Australians make to Lifeline each year, to remind people that help is available.
