Become a Lifeline WA volunteer and make a real difference

Are you looking for a way to give back to your community in a meaningful and fulfilling way? Volunteering with Lifeline WA’s Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme (ACVVS) might be just the opportunity you’re looking for.

The ACVVS connects caring volunteers with older people living in aged care homes or receiving a home care package who may be feeling lonely or socially isolated. By simply offering your time and friendship, you can brighten someone’s day and improve their mental and emotional wellbeing.

We are not currently seeking additional ACVVS volunteers, but you are welcome to submit an application and we will contact you if a position becomes available.

Why volunteer with ACVVS?

Loneliness can deeply affect an older person’s quality of life. By volunteering just once a week or once a fortnight, you can help change that. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Create genuine human connection through shared stories, games, a cup of tea or a simple walk.
  • Support the wellbeing of someone who may have little or no family contact.
  • Gain personal fulfilment knowing you’ve made a difference.
  • Join a supportive team of fellow volunteers and Lifeline WA staff.
  • Develop skills in communication, empathy and aged care awareness.

Hear from our volunteers

Meet Mei, Lifeline WA ACVVS Volunteer

Mei is a mature aged student studying to be a psychologist. When she first started visiting her people, she had no idea of the impact the program would have on her and how much she would learn about the power of human connection.

Meet Bill, Lifeline WA ACVVS Volunteer

Bill recently retired from the formal workforce and was looking for a way to give back to his local community. Hear about his unique experience of volunteering and the special bond he has made with his person.

What does volunteering involve?

  • Commit to visiting an older person in your local community once a fortnight (or more frequently if possible).
  • Be 18 years or older.
  • Complete our training and induction program.
  • Undergo a National Police Clearance (organised and paid for by Lifeline WA).
  • Provide confirmation of current flu and COVID-19 vaccinations.

The role is simple but incredibly impactful. Whether you’re reminiscing over old memories, playing cards, watching a movie or chatting over coffee, your time means the world to someone else.

As a mature-aged psychology student, I joined the ACVVS to gain insight into aged care. What I didn’t expect was how deeply connected I’d become to the person I visit. The stories, the shared laughter — it’s one of the most rewarding things I’ve done.

Volunteer

After I retired, I wanted to stay connected to the community. Through the ACVVS, I’ve developed a really special friendship with someone I now consider a mate. It’s added so much meaning to my retirement.
