Course Description:
Vicarious trauma refers to a negative transformation in a worker resulting from regularly providing support to people who have experienced trauma or being exposed to potentially traumatic content.
Understanding, managing, and preventing vicarious trauma can help workers maintain their mental health and wellbeing and reduce the risk of compassion fatigue, secondary traumatic stress and burnout. The workshop is designed to help individuals manage the risk of developing vicarious trauma by using tools to encourage self-regulation and promote resilience.
Objectives
- Define vicarious trauma and distinguish it from compassion fatigue and burnout.
- Recognise the signs and symptoms of vicarious trauma.
- Describe impacts and effects of vicarious trauma.
- Develop strategies for self-care and resilience to manage the risk of developing vicarious trauma.
Who will benefit from this training?
- Anyone exposed to potentially traumatic stories or materials in the course of their role that does not have a thorough understanding of vicarious trauma.
- Examples could include managers and team leaders, escalations teams, peer supporters, contact officers, support workers, people and culture, insurance claims, financial services, legal services, and community organisations.
