Course Description:

Designed to extend the skills gained from Accidental Counsellor training with Lifeline WA, this focused workshop adds essential knowledge when supporting clients from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds. It explores common stressors in migration, refugee and settlement experiences, and covers approaches to provide inclusive, respectful support.

Objectives 

• Define what “culturally and linguistically diverse” means.
• Discuss how culture influences perspectives, behaviour, understanding of mental health and illness, and help-seeking.
• Describe potential challenges and impacts of migration and settlement experiences on CALD individuals.
• Identify barriers that may prevent people from CALD backgrounds from seeking help.
• Apply practical strategies to reflect on personal attitude and perspective and assist the client/peers in a culturally responsive way.

Who will benefit from this training? 

• Staff or peer supporters who provide services to people from CALD backgrounds.

Pre-requisite training 

Participants must have attended the Accidental Counsellor workshop or Peer Support training delivered by Lifeline WA within the past 2 years.
